Architectural Gilding
Our studio’s expertise in restoration and gilding enables us to apply the same exacting standards of craftsmanship and finish to large-scale interior schemes as we do to individual pieces of bespoke furniture. Whether working on architectural elements, decorative surfaces, or custom installations, we approach each commission with a thorough understanding of materials, proportion and period detail.
Alongside gilded and painted schemes, we provide a comprehensive research and project management service to support clients from initial enquiry through to completion. This includes historical and technical investigation, condition reporting, scientific analysis where required, and close coordination with designers, architects, contractors, and specialist consultants to ensure that each project is delivered with precision and care.
Oil gilding is the preferred method for architectural work because of its versatility and durability across a broad range of surfaces. Unlike water gilding, it can be used externally as well as indoors, making it particularly well-suited to decorative features exposed to changing conditions. It also offers a more economical solution for many interior schemes, while still achieving a rich and elegant finish.

The process is a skilled and intricate one, tailored to each individual piece. For oil gilding, the surface must first be carefully sealed before a size — a specialist adhesive — is applied with great precision to the areas to be gilded. Once the size has reached the correct level of tack, the gold leaf is laid and gently pressed into place, revealing a bright, lustrous gilded surface. This can then be subtly aged and toned if a more sympathetic, antique appearance is desired.
In terms of application, the possibilities are broad. Individual details on moulded cabinetry and furniture can be picked out to great effect, as can architectural elements such as cornicing — where selective gilding can bring extraordinary definition and elegance to even the most intricate of profiles.
We are always happy to guide clients on the most suitable approach for their project. Every scheme is different, and the right balance of gilding and painted decoration can vary enormously depending on the desired effect. For a subtle result, lighter detailing may be all that is needed, whilst a more dramatic finish might require bolder elements to be picked out in gold. We are able to produce samples such as a section of cornice.
